CharlieHR is a popular HR platform with a clean interface and good absence management features for small teams. Employees can request leave, managers approve or decline, and the calendar shows who is out. It does the basics well.

Mellow's absence module adds dimensions that matter as businesses grow. Absence patterns — Bradford Factor scoring, rolling 12-month absence rates — are calculated automatically and visible to HR managers. CharlieHR does not include native payroll — absence data does not flow into a payroll calculation without a separate integration. In Mellow, an approved leave record automatically updates the payroll run for that period, including SSP calculations for sick leave and SMP for maternity. The absence and payroll data are the same record. That reduces reconciliation and makes year-end statutory reporting — for SSP and SMP recovery from HMRC — straightforward rather than a manual exercise.
