Deel alternative for UK businesses
Reviewed by Mellow Editorial Team, HR & payroll content team
Businesses looking for a Deel alternative in the UK want a platform that handles compliant payroll, contractor payments or employer-of-record services without unnecessary complexity or cost. The right choice depends on whether you need to pay employees, contractors, or both — and how much of your workforce is UK-based versus international.
What Deel actually does well
Deel is a large, well-funded global HR platform. It covers employer-of-record (EOR) services in a wide range of countries, handles contractor payments in multiple currencies, and offers an integrated HR dashboard. For businesses with heavily international teams spread across many jurisdictions, that breadth is useful.
Its pricing reflects that scale. EOR services typically come at a per-employee monthly fee that can be significant for smaller businesses, and contractor management is charged separately. If your workforce is predominantly UK-based, you may be paying for global infrastructure you rarely use.
Where UK businesses sometimes find gaps
Deel was built for global coverage first. That means its handling of UK-specific payroll rules — Real Time Information (RTI) submissions to HMRC, auto-enrolment pension contributions, Statutory Sick Pay, and P60 and P11D filing — sits within a broader system designed to serve dozens of countries simultaneously.
For UK employers, the detail matters. RTI requires a Full Payment Submission (FPS) to HMRC on or before each payday. Auto-enrolment requires employer contributions of at least 3% of qualifying earnings, with employees contributing at least 5%. P60s must be issued by 31 May and P11Ds by 6 July. Getting these wrong carries penalties, and businesses sometimes find that platforms built around global EOR are less precise on domestic compliance specifics than a UK-focused alternative.
The Employment Rights Act 2025 has also expanded day-one rights for employees, adding new compliance considerations for any employer onboarding UK staff. A platform that actively tracks UK legislative changes matters more now than it did two or three years ago.
What to look for in an alternative
When evaluating any Deel alternative for the UK, it helps to be specific about what you actually need:
Contractor payments only. If you pay UK or international freelancers and need a clean, auditable way to manage invoices and payments in multiple currencies, you do not need full payroll software. Look for a platform that handles contractor onboarding, invoice processing and currency conversion without bundling in services you do not use.
UK employed payroll. If you have employees on your own payroll, you need a provider that runs RTI-compliant submissions, manages tax codes, handles National Insurance at the correct rates (employees at 8% up to the upper earnings limit, then 2% above it; employers at 13.8%), and administers pension auto-enrolment properly. This is a different requirement from EOR, and pricing should reflect that.
EOR for international hires. If you want to hire someone in another country without setting up a legal entity there, you need an EOR. Evaluate coverage country by country — the number of countries listed on a website matters less than the depth of compliance in the specific markets where you actually hire.
Mixed workforce. Many growing UK businesses have a combination: some UK employees on payroll, some overseas employees hired through EOR, and a pool of contractors. A platform that handles all three under one login without charging enterprise rates for a ten-person team is worth finding.
How Mellow fits into this picture
Mellow is built for businesses that pay people across borders, with particular attention to the practical realities of UK employment and contractor compliance. It supports payroll across multiple countries from one platform, handles contractor payments with proper documentation, and manages UK payroll with RTI submissions, pension auto-enrolment and statutory leave administration built in rather than bolted on.
The pricing model is designed to suit small and mid-sized businesses rather than enterprise customers with hundreds of employees in dozens of countries. That makes it a practical option if Deel's pricing feels disproportionate to your actual headcount.
Where Mellow does not have the same breadth as Deel is in the raw number of EOR countries covered. If you are hiring in a very large number of markets simultaneously, a platform with deeper global EOR infrastructure may serve you better. Most UK businesses, however, hire in a relatively small number of countries, and depth of compliance in those specific markets matters more than the total number on a list.
Questions worth asking any provider
Before committing to any payroll or HR platform, ask:
- Who is responsible if an RTI submission is late or incorrect — you or the provider?
- How are Employment Rights Act 2025 changes reflected in the platform?
- Is pension auto-enrolment administered end-to-end, including communications to employees?
- What is the per-contractor or per-employee cost at your actual headcount, not a packaged tier?
- Can you see a clear audit trail for every payment made?
The answers tell you more about operational fit than any feature list.
