Payslip Legal Requirements for UK Employers
UK employers must provide a written payslip to every employee and worker on or before each payday. This has been a legal requirement since 2019, when the right was extended to all workers (not just employees). Agency workers are also entitled to payslips from their employer of record.
The payslip must show: gross pay, any fixed deductions and a description of what they are, net pay, and the method of payment if different from the previous pay period. If a worker's pay varies with hours — for example, a zero-hours worker — the payslip must also show the number of hours paid for. Failure to provide a payslip, or providing one that omits required information, can lead to a tribunal claim for unlawful deduction from wages.
Mellow generates payslips automatically at the end of each pay run. They are accessible to employees via the self-service portal immediately after payroll is approved. The payslip format includes all legally required fields and additional information — pension deductions, benefits, year-to-date figures — that employees find useful. Digital payslips are fully compliant. Paper copies are only required if an employee specifically requests them.
